Three Phase to Single Phase Electric Motor Conversions

Converting equipment from 3-phase to single-phase power? You're in the right place.

MM Engineering Services specialises in converting three-phase motors to single-phase replacements—and we've successfully done this for thousands of industrial machines, car lifts, lathes, pillar drills, table saws, and workshop equipment.

Unlike generic online forums or mass-market retailers, we understand the specific requirements of each machine type. A conversion solution for a car lift is completely different from a lathe—and we solve both correctly the first time.

When Conversion Makes Sense:

✅You have single-phase power only (230V) at your premises
✅Your equipment is three-phase (400V)
✅You want to avoid the cost of three-phase installation (£2,000-5,000 from your energy supplier)
✅The equipment is worth keeping (car lifts, high-quality lathes, industrial drills)

When Conversion Doesn't Make Sense

❌If equipment is already single-phase – no conversion needed
❌If you're discarding the equipment – not worth the investment
❌If you have three-phase power available – use it as-is (more efficient)
❌If multiple three-phase motors need converting – consider three-phase installation instead

Two Conversion Methods Compared

Choosing the right type of single phase motor depends on your starting torque requirements and application.

Single Phase Motor Replacement **Most Common**

What it is: Replace the three-phase motor with a direct equivalent single-phase motor.

  • ✅ Most cost-effective
  • ✅ Simplest installation
  • ✅ Best long-term reliability (no external converters needed)
  • ✅ No ongoing maintenance (motor is all you need)
  • ✅ Faster speed availability (most sizes in stock, same-day delivery available)
  • ✅ Excellent support (we've installed thousands of these)
  • ❌ Limited power range (single-phase motors max out at ~3.7kW / 5HP in UK)
  • ❌ Higher starting current (domestic circuit breaker needs replacing to Type C)
  • ❌ No speed control

Phase Converter ** Best for Speed Control

What it is: An electronic device that converts single-phase 230V power into three-phase 400V power electronically.

  • ✅ No motor replacement needed (keep original equipment - must be 230/400V)
  • ✅ Variable speed control (run motor at any speed from 0-100%)
  • ✅ Soft starting (gradual acceleration reduces shock)
  • ✅ Protection features (thermal overload, phase failure protection)
  • ✅ Compact
  • ❌ ALOT Higher cost than single phase motor replacement
  • ❌ More complex installation
  • ❌ Loss of torque and power
  • ❌ Not ideal for all equipment (some equipment designed for fixed speed)

2 Post & 4 Post Hydraulic & Screw Type Car Lift Motor Conversion - A Complete Guide

MM Engineering Services has supplied replacement single-phase motors for a wide range of car lifts originally fitted with three-phase motors. Our experience includes 2 Post & 4 Post Bradbury hydraulic car lifts and Tecalemit screw- and pulley-driven lifts and many other car lift brands.

If you only have a single-phase electricity supply, contact us with your lift details and photographs of the existing motor. We can help identify a suitable replacement, subject to checking the motor specification, mounting arrangement and application.

Bradbury Hydraulic Car Lift Motor Replacements
If your Bradbury car lift has an older Newman 2hp, approximately 2800rpm three-phase motor with a 5/8-inch shaft, we stock a single-phase replacement option. This replacement is intended to fit the original motor position and connect to the existing hydraulic pump, subject to confirming the shaft, mounting dimensions and pump coupling.

ASEA and ABB motors (e.g. Bradbury 40 Series)
We also stock single-phase replacement options for selected Bradbury lifts fitted with 1.5kW, approximately 2800rpm ASEA or ABB three-phase motors carrying these references:

MT80B19F165-2
MT90B24F165

We always use our 2.22-90-IE2-B5-CC to replace the Asea/ABB Three phase motors, and then get our workshop to modify the shaft from 24mm to 19mm if needed.

Tecalemit and Other Screw- or Pulley-Driven Car Lift Conversions
We always recommend using a 3.7kW 1500rpm High Start/Running Torque motor such as our 3.74-112-IE2-B3-CC to cover the starting torque losses when moving from 3phase to 1phase as the lift is completely reliant on the electric motor for its torque.

Why We Use Capacitor-Start/Capacitor-Run Motors
We always use the capacitor start/capacitor run single phase motors (also called CSCR or dual-capacitor motors) which are designed with two capacitors and allow them to deliver the highest starting torque of any single phase motor type – typically 1.8-2.5 times the rated torque. This makes them essential for applications with high inertia loads or where the motor must start under load e.g. Car Lift, Compressors or Conveyor.

Myford and Boxford Lathe Motor Conversions: Three Phase to Single Phase

MM Engineering Services has supplied replacement single-phase motors for a wide range of metalworking lathes fitted with three-phase motors. Our experience includes the Myford & Boxford lathe
ranges including the Myford ML7, Super 7, ML7R or ML10, or a Boxford AUD, BUD
or CUD, and many other lathe brands.

If your workshop only has a 240V single-phase electricity supply, we can help identify a suitable replacement lathe motor. Send us your lathe model and photographs of the existing motor, nameplate and mounting arrangement so we can check the options before you order.

Replacement Motors for Older Myford and Boxford Lathes
Older lathes may be fitted with motors carrying Brook Crompton or Crompton Parkinson branding, or Gryphon and Cub range names.

Examples we have encountered include imperial-frame motors
with:

- 5/8-inch shaft diameter, approximately 15.9mm.
- Shaft length of approximately 2 inches, or 50.8mm.
- Running speed around 1425rpm.
- Power ratings from approximately 1/4hp (0.18kW) to 3/4hp (0.55kW).

These details vary between machines, and some lathes have had their original motors replaced. We therefore check the motor nameplate and physical dimensions rather than selecting a replacement from the lathe model alone.

B56 Imperial-Frame Single-Phase Lathe Motors
For suitable applications, we supply B56 imperial-frame single-phase replacement motors designed to match the original motor’s mounting and shaft arrangement.

Our replacement options include drip-proof motors with a nominal 5/8-inch shaft and approximately 2-inch shaft extension. Before recommending a motor, we confirm the shaft height, shaft diameter and length, mounting dimensions, power and speed.

The B56 Imperial motor we most often use is a 550W 1425rpm CapStart Foot or Resilient Base Mounted 230V  with a 5/8" Dia Shaft x 90mm Length (Our Part number 604550MRBCS) - £ 214.84 + Shipping + VAT. We have other variations which include , no capacitor, resilient ring mount, 1/2" diameter shaft, B56 Flange plate as well as the ability to make a special mounting plate in our workshop to your original specification.

Matching these details can help retain the existing pulley and drive arrangement, subject to checking compatibility with the individual lathe.

Selecting a Motor for Your Lathe’s Operating Requirements
A suitable replacement must match how the lathe is used as well as its physical dimensions.

We assess the starting load, expected start/stop frequency, reversing requirements and existing controls before recommending a motor. The motor’s starting arrangement and rated duty must be appropriate for the application.
